It was a bit surprising to read this morning about that the Sioux Falls School District plans to raise property taxes by a 5.5 percent next year.
Seems like something we should talk about at 3 p.m. on 100 Eyes.
Going through the list of reasons for the increase, all seem worthy goals, but the one that’s going to get everybody’s attention, I think, is money for the Ipad and Chromebook program. That criticism probably isn’t deserved but it’s an easy mark for critics. Teacher pay and reading programs are admirable priorities, and really there isn’t much to quibble with in terms of the why.
The issue may be more in the how and when.
This proposal was just released this week and the School Board is scheduled to approve them on Monday.
It would seem that if one was going to raise property taxes, about a $100 on an average priced home in Sioux Falls by my rough estimate, then one might want to let that decision sink in a bit. Maybe take a little public input, even if, and I know this is a tough thing to do sometimes, you don’t always agree with what the public says.
Then again, it is our money.
We’ll also talk about bike trail etiquette and the Boston Marathon with Jacqueline Palfy Klemond. Lots going today. See you at 3.
