It all raises the question about how much is enough and when do we know, as a community, when we need to invest some money to help spur growth.
There’s no easy answer for that. The contention by the convention folks is that we’re missing out on business because we can’t house enough people on the Events Center/Arena/Convention Center footprint. That’s probably true. Who wants to walk across West Avenue in a blizzard? Nobody. That’s who.
But what should we do? Even if there were hotel rooms, do you want to attend a conference wedged between a residential neighborhood and an industrial park? Maybe not.
There’s always business to be had. But maybe there’s only so much we can overcome at that site. It doesn’t even showcase the best we have to offer.
