We can talk about it at 3 on 100 Eyes. Jodi Schwan will join me to talk about workforce development and other issues from this week’s Sioux Falls Business Journal. But as you know, Jodi also has a background in municipal government and can provide some perspective.
There’s a compelling argument for not taking the money, apparently an unprecedented act in modern American history.
But just think about what it might mean for our city, for our reputation. We’re so well run, our books so sound, our economy is so strong, that we don’t need federal assistance for something like an ice storm.
Frankly, the city has the money.
The justification for taking the cash is not without merit. It is our money tax dollars after all, and nobody turns their back on the federal help. Right?
I think it’s worth considering, however. We’d set a new standard in the country for independence and self-reliance. We’re South Dakotans after all. It’s reportedly engrained in the DNA.
Maybe CNN or the New York Times would do a story about it, instead of the usual weirdness that gets people’s attention outside our borders.
It’s not a political stance, Republican or Democrat, or ideological, conservative or liberal.
It’s just one small city making its way in the world.
I say send it back. Or sign over the check to OKC, they really need it right now.
